A Study on the Discourse Construction of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Short Videos by Hebei’s Official Douyin Accounts from the Perspective of Multimodality
Xiaohan Li

Abstract: China's Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) is a representative of traditional Chinese culture, while Hebei's ICH is one of its important components. Short videos related to ICH released on social media platforms, especially by official accounts, possess authority and influence, and can provide value orientation and public opinion guidance-thus playing a boosting role in ICH communication. This study collects ICH short videos released by Hebei's official accounts on the Douyin (a version of TikTok) platform since their establishment and constructs a self-built corpus, and classifies them into five categories based on content, theme, and presentation method. On this basis, relying on multimodal discourse analysis, the study constructs a discourse construction framework for short videos of Hebei's ICH in accordance with Fairclough's Three-Dimensional Analytical Model, and systematically analyzes the discourse strategies, discourse operation mechanisms, and discourse improvement strategies of the video. The study finds that various official accounts of Hebei actively release diverse types of ICH short videos, and construct a discourse system for ICH short videos through the synergy of multimodality. This not only promotes the inheritance, development, and international communication of Hebei's ICH, but also stimulates the audience's cultural emotions and guides the formation of a deep-level cognition of "protecting, preserving, and disseminating Hebei's ICH by means of digital technology". Based on these findings, the study further puts forward discourse improvement strategies regarding the current situation, aiming to optimize the discourse system of Hebei's ICH short videos and facilitate the inheritance and international communication of Hebei's as well as China's ICH.

Understanding Dog Owners Willingness to Pay for Rabies Vaccine in Northwest Ethiopia
FENTAHUN MENGIE

Abstract: Rabies is a viral disease of worm blooded animals posing significant threat for both animals and human. Effectiveness of a rabies control measures depends on the commitment and collaboration of dog owners. A study was conducted to assess dog owners’ willingness to pay for to a stated price amount of rabies vaccine in North West Ethiopia. In this study the contingent evaluation method was used to evaluate willingness to pay for rabies vaccine, and interval regression analysis was used to assess willingness to pay for rabies vaccine. Questionnaires data were collected from 423 dog owners to study their willingness to pay. Dog owners were purposively selected in four Gondar zones in North West Ethiopia. Majority of dog owners (62%) were willingness to pay for the suggested price bid amounts, but the number of dog owners had shown variability when it comes to specific price bid amounts. In general, the number of dog owners that were willingness to pay for rabies vaccine decreased when price of vaccine increased. The mean WTP for rabies vaccine was 36.58 ETB (0.677 USD) per year. Monthly income was associated (P< 0.05) with WTP for rabies vaccine. Dog owners who had higher income had higher odds of WTP. Education and knowledge on vaccination coverage were negatively associated with intention to control rabies and WTP for rabies vaccine, respectively. Intervention directed at changing dog owners’ attitude and subjective norms, making rabies vaccine available to dog owners with low price, and increasing awareness of dog owners on the importance, availability and ease of implementation of anti-rabies dog vaccination are important.

Methods of Abattoir Waste Management and its Effects on the Surrounding Community in Hawassa City, Sidama Region, Ethiopia
Mebeza Mohammed; Kinfe Kibebew

Abstract: Tis study assessed the methods of abattoir waste management and evaluated their environmental and socio-economic impacts on the surrounding community in Hawassa City. Using a community-based cross-sectional descriptive design, primary data were collected from 109 respondents through structured questionnaires, interviews, and field observations between March and August 2021. The findings revealed that the Hawassa Municipal Abattoir relied on rudimentary, hazardous disposal practices, primarily utilizing burial for wastewater (78%), feces (67.9%), and blood (45%), and open dumping for solid wastes, including hooves (85.3%) and inedible offal (79.8%). Statistical analysis identified significant public health and environmental consequences resulting from these practices. A strong association was observed between waste disposal methods and disease occurrence (χ² = 14.82, p = 0.001), as well as between proximity to the abattoir and respiratory health issues (χ² = 12.45, p = 0.005). Furthermore, correlation analyses demonstrated that improper dumping contributed to soil degradation (r = 0.54, p = 0.012) and that waste-related nuisance negatively impacted the living conditions of the surrounding population (r = -0.72, p < 0.001). These results underscored a critical failure in the existing waste management system to protect human health and environmental integrity. The study concluded that the continued reliance on unmanaged dumping and burial was unsustainable, necessitating an urgent transition toward modern, controlled waste treatment technologies and stricter regulatory oversight to mitigate these socio-economic and public health burdens in the Monopol sub-city.
